Behind the scenes
Cookies & embedded player
How website sessions and the external podcast player work.
Essential website sessions
The application uses a cookie called connect.sid when a session is needed, including for administrator sign-in, protecting listener forms, submission rate limits and feedback messages. It contains a session identifier; the associated information is stored on the server.
The configured cookie lifetime is up to seven days from its last renewal. It is marked HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax. Blocking essential cookies in your browser can prevent sign-in and form submissions from working.
RSS.com player
Episode pages with a player load RSS.com’s embedded player automatically. This connects your browser to RSS.com before you press play and shares connection information such as your IP address and browser details. RSS.com may use cookies or similar technologies and collect listening statistics. Its privacy policy explains its practices.
You can manage cookies and site data through your browser settings. Blocking third-party content may prevent the player from working.
If you follow a listening link to another platform, that platform’s own choices and policies apply.
Fonts and other storage
When you expand or collapse the listening banner, we remember that preference in session storage under variety-listen-collapsed. It applies within the current browser tab and is normally cleared when the tab closes. It is not used for tracking or sent to our server.
Our fonts are hosted on this website, so displaying the text does not contact Google Fonts. The application does not set advertising or general visitor-analytics cookies.
Read our privacy information for details about comments, votes and messages, or contact the hosts with a question.
